Shopify Popup Apps: Two Kinds With the Same Name, and How to Pick One

You search "popup app" and get two different products. Here's what each one does, and five questions that tell you which one your store needs.

You search "popup app" in the Shopify App Store and get two different products. You don't know which one fixes your problem. And you don't have a free afternoon to install both and find out.

This guide sorts that out in a few minutes. It explains the two kinds, gives you five questions that pick the right one, and says plainly what SalesPop does and what it doesn't.

Under one name, the App Store mixes two products that do opposite jobs.

The first kind interrupts. It's an overlay that covers the page and asks for something, usually an email address in exchange for a discount. Its job is to grow your list.

The second kind doesn't interrupt. It's a small notification in a corner of the screen that shows what other shoppers just did. Its job is to help a new visitor trust a store they've never heard of.

They look alike in a screenshot. On a real store they do nothing alike, which is why a list that ranks them together rarely helps you choose.

Capture overlays vs social proof notifications

Capture overlays ask for something. Think of an exit pop-up, a spin wheel or a "10% off for your email" box. They're measured on sign-ups. Shopify's own free Forms app does the basic version, with inline and pop-up forms (as of November 2026). So a paid capture app has to earn its fee on design and timing. The sign-ups then need an email platform to land in. SalesPop works with SmartrMail, an email and SMS platform for Shopify stores.

Social proof notifications answer a doubt. "Marina from Lisbon just bought the violet frames." A new review. A product that's really running low. They're measured on whether the visitor keeps going. If you want to see one kind of welcome message done well, our guide to the welcome popup shows the gentle version.

Plenty of stores run both. They sit in different parts of the screen and ask the shopper for different things.

Five questions that pick the app for you

Answer these in order. By the fifth, you'll know which kind you need and what to check before you install.

1. Is your problem the list, or the visitors who leave? If you have little traffic and no way to reach visitors again, start with a capture overlay. If you already pay for traffic and it leaves without buying, the problem is trust, and social proof is the job.

2. Does the app show only what really happened? A notification for an order that never happened gets spotted. So does a countdown to nothing, or "3 left" when nobody checked the stock. A shopper who spots one has a reason to doubt everything else on the page. Ask whether the app can invent activity when the store is quiet. The right answer is no.

3. What does it count, and can you forecast it? Popup apps charge by a unit, and the unit changes from app to app. Some count every notification shown, so one visitor can use up a dozen. A unit you can read off your own Shopify analytics, like visitors per month, lets you pick a plan in a minute.

4. Can you control where it shows? Look for rules by page, corner, frequency and duration. Keep notifications off the checkout, where the only thing a shopper should see is the pay button. Product reviews, for example, work best on the product page; our post on how reviews help your store sell explains why.

5. Can you see what each one did? If the app only reports one blended total, you won't know which notification to keep. Look for numbers per notification type.

What SalesPop does, and what it doesn't

SalesPop is the second kind of popup app. It shows shoppers real, recent activity from your Shopify store, at the moment it helps most.

What it does today (as of November 2026):

  • Pops for recent orders, products added to cart, reviews, welcome and discount messages.
  • A low stock Pop driven by your real Shopify inventory, never a made up number. Our post on low inventory notifications covers when it helps.
  • Rules for each Pop: which pages, which corner, how often and for how long.
  • A preview of every Pop before it publishes, so nothing reaches your store that you haven't seen.
  • Views, clicks, closes and conversions reported per Pop type.
  • Shoppers named by first name only. No email addresses, no order values.
  • Your first Pop is live in about a minute, with no code.

What it doesn't do:

  • It doesn't invent activity. A quiet store shows fewer Pops, and that's the honest reading.
  • It doesn't show fake countdowns or invented "people are viewing this" counters.
  • It isn't an exit overlay that asks for an email. If your list is the problem, start with a capture tool and add SalesPop once you have traffic worth reassuring.

What it costs. SalesPop is free to start. Paid plans are Starter at $29, Pro at $79 and Premium at $129 a month, each with a 7-day free trial. Each plan is counted in visitors per month (SalesPop on the Shopify App Store, as of November 2026).

SalesPop is rated 4.7 stars on the Shopify App Store (as of November 2026).

FAQ

What is the best pop-up app for Shopify?

There isn't one, because "pop-up" covers two jobs. For email sign-ups, Shopify's free Forms app is the baseline. For social proof, pick the app that shows only real activity, charges by a unit you can forecast and reports per notification type.

How do you add pop-ups on Shopify?

With an app. Shopify's own free Forms app adds sign-up pop-ups and inline forms to your store. Social proof notifications, like recent orders and reviews, come from apps such as SalesPop, which installs from the Shopify App Store with no code.

How much do popup apps cost?

Many have a free plan with a limit, then paid plans priced by a unit such as visitors, impressions or notifications. SalesPop is free to start, then $29, $79 or $129 a month, counted in visitors per month (as of November 2026). Check the unit before you compare prices.

Choose by the problem, not by the category name. If the list is the problem, a capture overlay comes first. If you're paying for visitors who leave without buying, show them what's really happening in your store.
